Mesmerising Aboriginal Dot Paintings for Sale
Indigenous dot art has a long, complex history of traditional storytelling. At Mbantua Gallery we are dedicated to supporting Aboriginal culture through art. We work in harmony with the traditional Aboriginal people in the Utopia region and across Central Australia to help them promote their culture. Our Indigenous dot art is entirely authentic, and each artwork is accompanied by an authenticity certificate and a profile of the individual artist. We have two gallery spaces in Alice Springs and Darwin where you view the works first-hand, or our online store has shipping throughout Australia and internationally.
The story behind Indigenous dot art
Aboriginal art, including dot paintings, is full of history and cultural significance. Dating back thousands of years, Indigenous communities have been using art to communicate and tell stories. Primarily, their art and symbols have been used for sacred rituals; being drawn either on rocks and walls, into the soil or onto the body.
It wasn’t until the 1970s that the dot paintings we recognise today were being created on canvas and made available for sale. The dots are a form of abstraction designed to prevent certain tribes sacred symbols from being recognised; either by other tribes or Westerners. They allow Aboriginal artists to create using their traditional symbols, whilst still concealing their true meanings. Cross hatching, lines and other markings that are commonly found in Aboriginal art are used by certain tribes and regions. The choice of dots, lines or other markings will help to ascertain where the artwork originates from. You can learn more about traditional Aboriginal symbols and Dreamtime culture on our website.
