These seven sisters are known collectively as the Petyarre Sisters. All were born in the remote Australian outback in a region northeast of Alice Springs in Atnangkere country known as Utopia. Their early childhood was spent in this beautiful desert area, learning the traditional ways of their people and being handed down their stories. The sisters are born of 3 different mothers but share the same father and are nieces to Emily Kame Kngwarreye, one of Australia’s most successful and influential Aboriginal artists.
Each sister inherited the Arnkerrthe (Mountain Devil Lizard) Dreaming and Awelye (Women's Ceremony) and a lot of their artworks depict these stories, on their own or in combination with the other. All the sisters excepting Jean were involved in the early Silk Batik group in the late 1970's and commenced painting on canvas in CAAMA's Summer Project in 1988/89. Developing their own unique styles each of the sisters have earned their place in the art world as successful Aboriginal artists.
