Winnie was born at Nullarbor Station and spent many years as a resident of Umeewarra Mission and Children's Home at Davenport. In 1958 the mission gave her the opportunity to head to Sydney to study art after showing much talent. Her painting skills and style earned her notable acclaim in her later years and she was able to earn an income from her art.
Winnie married William Fred Smith and together they had 5 children. Winnie passed away in 1987 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
