Collectively known as the Petyarre Sisters - Ada, Gloria, Jean, Kathleen, Myrtle, Nancy and Violet were all born in the remote desert region of Atnangkere country, in Utopia, northeast of Alice Springs. Growing up on Country, they were immersed in the traditional knowledge, cultural practices and storytelling of their people from an early age.
Although the sisters were born to three different mothers, they share the same father and are nieces of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, one of Australia's most celebrated and influential Aboriginal artists.
Each sister carries the Arnkerrthe (Mountain Devil Lizard) Dreaming and Awelye (Women's Ceremony), which are central to their cultural identity and are often expressed in their artworks - sometimes individually, and at other times woven together.
With the exception of Jean, the sisters were part of the pioneering silk batik movement in the late 1970's, later transitioning to painting on canvas through CAAMA's Summer Project in 1988-89. Over time, each artist developed a distinct artistic style and together they have become recognised as significant contributors to the contemporary Aboriginal art movement.
