Winnie was born at Nullarbor Station and spent many years living at Umeewarra Mission and Children's Home in Davenport. In 1958, the mission recognised her artistic talent and provided her with an opportunity to study art in Sydney. Her skills and unique style brought her significant acclaim later in life, allowing her to earn an income from her art.
Winnie married William Fred Smith, with whom she had five children. She passed away in 1987 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
This landscape by Winnie reflects the colour and formation of the many ranges, hills, gorges and flora that are found in her country, Nullarbor Station, West of Alice Springs in Central Australia. This country truly has the blue and purple colours of the ranges in the distance, the rich colour in the sand and an amazing contrast when the plentiful flora is in bloom.
