The Life and Legacy of Barbara Weir
Born in 1940 at what was formerly known as Derry Downs Station in the Utopia region, Barbara Weir was the daughter of the late Minnie Pwerle and Irish station owner Jack Weir. She was raised by her aunt, the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and experienced the profound disruption of being removed from her family as a child. As a member of the Stolen Generations, Barbara spent many years away from Utopia before eventually finding her family and returning to the Country where she was born.

Barbara returned to Utopia in the late 1960s with her three children and began the long process of reconnecting with her family, Country and cultural heritage. Having lost her first language during her childhood, she later learned both Anmatyerre and Alyawarre from scratch, becoming one of the few people to master both languages in this way in later life. Her life journey and reconnection with Country became an important foundation for her artistic practice.
