The Aboriginal community in Australia have no written language so their cultural stories are often portrayed using symbols and icons in their artwork to preserve their heritage, stories and culture.

Traditional Aboriginal dot paintings consist of thousands of “Dots”. It takes the artist many, many hours of concentration and attentiveness as the completed painting represents a story with traditional symbols embedded throughout.

And while some of the symbols may look simple, they are used in elaborate and well thought-out combinations to tell a complex story. Paintings done by artists often have an ‘outside’ story for non-indigenous audiences, while there’s a more thorough inside story that can be understood by those with the appropriate level of knowledge.
