About Jeannie Mills Pwerle

Jeannie Mills Pwerle was born around 1965 at Utopia and is part of the Alyawarre language group. She is the daughter of Dolly Mills and niece of the renowned Minnie Pwerle, who influenced her early artistic development. Like many women of Utopia, she began her creative journey working in batik before transitioning to acrylic painting in the late 1990s. Since then, her works have gained national recognition for their distinctive motion and layered dot work.

Her most recognised series depicts the Yam Dreaming, with organic lines and dot patterns symbolising the yam root systems, growth cycles and women's ceremonies. These Dreamings are passed down through matrilineal lineage and hold great significance for Jeannie, who carries this story with clarity and confidence in her artistic voice.
