Ruby Morton Kngwarreye

Ruby Morton Kngwarreye is an Alyawarre artist connected to Ngkwarlerlanem and Arnkawenyerr Country in the Utopia region of Central Australia.

Ruby comes from one of Utopia's most celebrated artistic families. She is the daughter of renowned artist the late Mary Morton Kemarre and has continued the strong painting tradition shared by her sisters, aunties and extended family.

She was among the original group of Utopia women to learn the art of batik, with her work included in the prestigious Robert Holmes à Court Collection. Like many of her contemporaries, she later transitioned to acrylic painting while also creating wood carvings.

Working in acrylic on canvas and linen, Ruby paints the stories of her Country, including Awelye (Women's Ceremony), Alhepalh (Acacia dictyophleba), Ilyarnayt (Acacia validinervia), Rainbow Dreaming and camp scenes. Her paintings reflect both her cultural inheritance and the distinctive artistic style that has become synonymous with her family's legacy.
