Oscar was born as the second son of Albert Namatjira and is the older brother of Ewald, both of whom became renowned watercolour artists. He spent his childhood in Hermannsburg and the surrounding areas, immersed in the landscapes that would later influence his work.

Oscar began painting in the late 1940s and continued until around the mid-1970s. Over the years, his artistic style evolved and his work frequently showcased the landscapes of the Central MacDonnell Ranges, reflecting the natural beauty of his homeland.
