The Hunter Sisters - Annie, Jessie, and Susan - are three talented artists whose creativity has helped shape the Utopia art movement since the late 1980's. All three began their journey with the Utopia Women’s Batik Group and were part of 'A Picture Story', a project by CAAMA that documented these early works. Not long after, they each moved into painting on canvas and have since taken part in many group exhibitions, including the well-known Robert Holmes à Court touring exhibition of silk batiks.

Art runs deep in their family. Their mother, Molly Pwerle, and brother, Sandy Hunter, are both respected artists, and the sisters have each developed a refined style of their own. Their paintings often feature intricate patterns of fine dots, telling stories from Arawerre country and their mother’s country, Atnwengerrp and Irrweltye. Though each sister paints with her own touch, their connection to culture and Country is the strong thread that ties their work together.

We were lucky to have Annie, Jessie and Susan visit the gallery recently with some of their family. They were full of excitement seeing their artworks featured together on a special wall. It was a joyful moment filled with laughs, stories and plenty of photos - an unforgettable visit from a family whose art continues to inspire.
