Therese Ryder (1946-2023) was an Eastern Arrernte artist connected to Santa Teresa Country, south east of Alice Springs. Growing up at Santa Teresa Mission, Therese developed her love of drawing and painting from an early age, encouraged by teachers and mission staff who recognised her natural artistic ability. These early influences helped shape her beautiful landscape paintings, inspired by the places and memories of her Country.

Therese was a versatile artist who worked in watercolour on board as well as acrylic on canvas and linen. Her artwork captured the beauty of her homeland through landscapes, bush foods and traditional scenes of women dancing in ceremony.

A gentle and respected person, Therese painted for Mbantua Gallery on and off since the late 1980s. Her artworks continue to be treasured for the warmth, connection and quiet beauty they bring to the stories of Santa Teresa Country.
