Young, the older brother of the late Barney Daniels, shares his country near their mother's homeland in the Papunya/Napperby area. Their father spoke Warlpiri and hailed from the Lajamanu region. Young worked as a stockman and later as a mechanic on bore maintenance before settling in Papunya.
In 1985, he was introduced to painting by Clifford Possum, with whom he shared a camp. Young is also related to Aboriginal artist Mary Dixon.
