Bronwyn Bancroft, born in 1958 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, is a proud Bundjalung woman and a prominent figure in contemporary Aboriginal art. Her vibrant works span painting, illustration, textiles, and public art, often blending traditional Aboriginal motifs with bold, modern aesthetics. Bancroft's art reflects her deep connection to Country and her commitment to cultural storytelling.
In 1985, she founded Designer Aboriginals, a fashion label showcasing fabrics designed by Aboriginal artists, including herself. She was also a founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative in 1987, which played a crucial role in promoting urban-based Indigenous artists. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in major Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Beyond visual arts, Bancroft has made significant contributions to children's literature, illustrating and authoring over 40 books that celebrate Aboriginal culture and heritage. She has also been active in arts governance and advocacy, serving on boards such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Australian Society of Authors.
