Artwork Story

This group of paintings illustrates an Atyetyart story from the olden days, following a young man during a period of initiation when he lives alone on Country. During this time he must hunt, travel and reflect as he begins to discover his own story and place within his culture. Each painting represents a moment from this journey.
1. This painting shows the young man living alone during his initiation. At this stage he must spend time by himself on Country, learning and searching for his own story - "He gotta find his story". In this scene he leaves his shelter, preparing to go out hunting.
2. In this artwork the man decides to travel into the nearby hills. He walks across the landscape, moving further into Country as part of his journey.
3. While in the hills he spots a kangaroo and throws his spear towards it. In his left hand he carries a shield, which is used for protection in case he encounters an enemy while travelling alone.
4. The hunt is successful. The man carries the kangaroo to a nearby waterhole where he lights a fire and cooks the animal in the coals, continuing the traditional practices of living and hunting on Country.
This style of storytelling through painting has sparked growing interest among younger Aboriginal men who are eager to learn more about the Atyetyart - the stories and knowledge of the old people.
