Artwork Story

There are 8 artworks in this set, with each piece measuring 13 x 13cm. Please note that this set has been pre-framed in a black box-style frame and is ready to hang on your wall.

This group of paintings by Harold Payne illustrates a story from the Atyetyart - stories from the olden days - set on his Ilkawerne Country, located to the south-east of the Utopia region.

1. A spirit man sits at the entrance to a cave with a young boy who has become lost. He sits thinking about what to do.

2. The spirit man continues thinking and lights a firestick. He decides to try to find the boy's family.

3. The spirit man and the young boy continue walking through the night.

4. The spirit man decides to make a large fire while the boy sits and watches.

5. He adds more wood to the fire, creating lots of smoke so the boy's family will be able to see it.

6. They continue walking. The young boy becomes tired, so the spirit man carries him.

7. The spirit man and boy find an old campsite belonging to the boy's family.

8. They follow fresh tracks and eventually find the family's new camp. Everyone is happy to be reunited.

This style of storytelling through painting has sparked growing interest among younger Aboriginal men who are eager to learn more about the Atyetyart - the stories and knowledge of the old people.
