Selina Teece Pwerle is an Alyawarre artist connected to Antarrengeny Country, north of the Utopia region in Central Australia. Growing up surrounded by Country, family and art, Selina was immersed in the stories and landscapes of her community from a young age. The daughter of artist Lulu Teece Pwerle, she learnt by watching her mother and other artists paint their own cultural stories and connections to Country.
Working in acrylic on canvas and linen, Selina is known for her distinctive depictions of Spinifex, using a fan brush to capture its movement across the land. She also paints gum blossoms, bush flowers, bush medicine and Akatyerre (Bush Tomato), inspired by the natural environment around her.
Selina began painting for Mbantua Gallery in 2018 and her works have been exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. While her art has taken her to many places, her inspiration remains deeply connected to Antarrengeny Country, where her family, memories and cultural knowledge continue to shape her work.
Selina has painted spinifex that she can find in her country, Antarrengeny. Spinifex, or aptly named the porcupine grass, is a sharp, pointed grass that is abundant in Central Australia.
