Malcolm was born at Aningie Station, the son of Minnie Napanangka and an Irish stockman. He was a part of the 'Stolen Generation' and was taken from his mother at around the age of 6. He spent the following years in Adelaide, attending school and playing football for North Adelaide.
Malcolm returned to the desert in 1976 and over the next few years was initiated into his traditional Aboriginal culture. He was introduced to painting in the mid 1980's by his uncle.
