Yumpululu was born in the area of Kiwirrkura and lived a very traditional life during his early years, travelling with his family across his country. He was living in Papunya in the early days of the Papunya art movement which is where he began painting. By 1980 Yumpululu was emerging as a recognised artist and during this time one of his works was purchased by the Chase Manhaattan Bank in New York.
