Samuel was born in Arnhem Land, the son of renowned artist Peter Marralwanga from whom he learnt to paint. Samuel began to paint in the late 1980s, painting the stories of his clan that had been passed to him and his brothers, acclaimed artists Ivan Namarrikki and Glen Namunjdja.
Samuel paints onto bark, arches paper and poles using traditional ochres. He has a deep wealth of knowledge of animals and spirit figures which comes through in his paintings. Detailed brush work portrays the stories and spirituality of his land.
