Kaureen was the daughter of artists Kevin Bird and Marie Ryder, born in Alice Springs in 1996. She grew up at Mulga Bore and attended Mulga Bore School. Kaureen began painting for Mbantua Gallery in 2018, inspired by watching her parents and aunties; Tanya, Maggie, Alvira and Rosemary Bird. This inspiration led her to start painting herself.
KaureenÂ’s stories were inherited from her fatherÂ’s ancestors and are deeply connected to her country, Ilkawerne.
Kaureen paints Awelye (Women's Ceremonial and Body Paint Designs) for the Tyankern, a sweet edible berry that belongs to a type of mistletoe. This is a very important story for Kaureen that belongs to her country, Ilkawerne (El-go-an-na) . This story, its songs, dances and symbols have been passed down to Kaureen.
Linear designs represent Awelye. These designs are painted onto the chest, breasts, arms and thighs. Powders ground from red and yellow ochre (clays), charcoal and ash are used as body paint and applied with a flat stick with soft padding. The women sing the songs associated with their Awelye as each woman takes her turn to be 'painted-up'. Women perform Awelye ceremonies to demonstrate respect for their country and the total well-being and health of their community.
