Yam Flowers MB056462-Dolly Mills Petyarre

In this painting Dolly depicts yam flowers growing in Utopia. These flowers belong to the pencil yam called Atnwelarre (Vigna lancelolata). The Atnwelarre is a trailing herb or creeper, sometimes covering large areas, with yellow flowers, bright green leaves and long skinny yams (swollen roots). These yams are an important food source which can be eaten raw or cooked in hot sand and ashes.

The Atnwelarre story is very important Dreamtime story for Dolly's country, Alhalkere, in the Utopia region and ceremonies by her people are performed to ensure its productivity as a food source and life form of the ancestors.
