Women Collecting Bush Beans and Merne Atwakeye (Wild Orange) MB043318-Annette Davis Petyarre

This painting is about old women collecting bush beans, which can be seen in each corner of this painting, and wild oranges. The small slender wild orange tree grows about 3½ m high with dark bark and weeping foliage. The wild oranges hang down on long stalks, turning yellow or a red tint when ripe; most commonly during the month of February. Young fruit are often ripened in hot sand. These oranges are generally favoured as a better fruit than others of this species by the Aboriginal people.

In this painting Annette has also depicted the women by the U shaped motifs, accompanied by their digging sticks and coolamons (carved wooden bowls).
