Spear Straightening and Utnea (Carpet Snake) Dreaming MB026640-Lindsay Bird Mpetyane

Lindsay has painted two major Dreaming stories belonging to his country, Ilkawerne; the Spear Straightening and Utnea (Carpet Snake). The spears are represented by the parallel lines running down the centre. The spears are made from selected limbs of the Mulga Tree. Limbs selected for the spears are reasonably straight but heat from fire will make any adjustments. Throughout the making and straightening of the spears, Lindsay and the other Ilkawerne men are singing their dreaming. Lindsay's Dreamings also include Mulga Seed dreaming and much significance is placed in regard to this tree.

The curved linear design represents the Utnea, king of the carpet snakes. The Utnea story tells of Lindsay's ancestors travelling as Utnea, coming across many waterholes and campsites. They are hunting and singing their sacred songs, before stopping and changing back to people.

The background dotting represents the colours of his country, 'Ilkawerne'.
