Aileen Mpetyane
Ahalpere, Utopia Region
Daughter of the late Minnie Pwerle (acclaimed Australian artist) and the late Motorcar Jim Ngale, Aileen was born and raised on Utopia Homestead. As a young woman Aileen worked on the Utopia Station for Dora McLeod doing laundry work, “by hand, no machine in that time” recalls Aileen. Maggie Pwerle, Minnie’s sister who had a reputation for being a good hunter, taught Aileen how to hunt for porcupine and dig for honey ants.
In the early 1970’s Aileen was involved with the batik program on Utopia Homestead, then in the late 1980’s started working with acrylic paint on canvas. Usually the designs in her paintings relate to the Anwekety Dreaming from her country, Ahalpere.
